Not Every Waterproofing Tender Is Worth Winning

Winning more waterproofing tender does not always mean growing your business. Learn how NZ waterproofing contractors can identify jobs that may not be worth winning.

Winning a waterproofing tender feels like progress.

Another project. Another builder. Another number added to the pipeline.

But there is a question that doesn't get asked often enough: Was this actually a job worth winning?

A waterproofing business can be busy and still struggle to make money. You can have crews working every week, materials moving, invoices going out and the phone constantly ringing - yet the business owner is still wondering where the profit went. Sometimes the problem isn't a lack of work. It's accepting the wrong work.

A tender should be judged on more than the price

Before submitting a waterproofing tender, most contractors naturally look at the estimated cost and expected margin. That's important. But there are other factors that can make one project much more attractive than another.

For example:

  • How difficult is the project to deliver?

  • How clear is the scope?

  • How much coordination will be required?

  • How exposed are you to variations?

  • How reliable is the client?

  • How demanding is the programme?

  • How far is the project from your existing work?

  • Does the project fit your team's capability?

  • Is the expected margin worth the commercial risk?

A $250,000 project isn't automatically better than a $100,000 project. If the larger project consumes disproportionate management time, creates constant rework and carries significant commercial uncertainty, the smaller project may actually be the better business decision.

Your tender workload has a cost too

This is particularly important for growing waterproofing businesses. A contractor might spend several hours - sometimes much more - preparing a complicated tender that ultimately doesn't proceed. That isn't necessarily wasted effort. Tendering is part of business. But if your team is spending most of its time pricing projects with a low probability of success, you may be taking valuable attention away from better opportunities. A more deliberate tender process can help. Before committing significant time, consider whether the project deserves the effort.

Look at the client as well as the project

Not every builder is the same. Some provide clear information, make decisions quickly and pay attention to scope. Others may have poorly coordinated documentation, constantly changing requirements or a history of commercial disputes. The project itself might look attractive. The client relationship might tell a different story. This is where keeping some history around your pricing opportunities becomes useful. Over time, you can start seeing patterns:

Which clients request regularly?
Who gives useful feedback?
Who actually awards work?
Which projects tend to create problems?
Which builders are worth prioritising?

That information becomes a commercial asset.

The goal isn't more tenders

The goal is better tenders. A healthy waterproofing business doesn't necessarily need to price everything that comes through the inbox. It needs a pipeline where the opportunities being pursued make sense for the business. That means understanding the project before investing heavily in it. A specialist QS can help here by reviewing the drawings, scope, complexity and commercial risks early, giving the owner better information before they commit significant time and resources.

Sometimes saying no is good business

There will always be projects where the correct decision is to walk away. Not because you can't do the work. Because the combination of price, risk, programme, client and complexity doesn't make commercial sense. That's not losing a job. That's protecting capacity for a better one.
